Despite creating three Iron Man movies, a Hulk feature, a star-spangled picture for Captain America, an otherworldly film for Thor, and an adventure to house them all in The Avengers, Marvel Studios has yet to scratch the surface when it comes to the exploits these characters have experienced in their numerous decades of publication. The sequel to The Avengers, titled The Avengers: Age of Ultron, will introduce the new characters, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, along with their own storylines, as they help our original cast battle the robot machinations of Ultron (James Spader). This story arc is only one of thousands that the Avengers have participated in during their time in the funny pages. There’s a goldmine out there for The Avengers director, Joss Whedon, to choose from and it’s only a matter of time until we see the far reaches of the Marvel-verse be brought to life. Hit the jump to read our choices for Marvel Storylines that could find a great home in theaters. Civil War When a group of untrained super heroes named the New Warriors triggers a series of events that destroy a small town in Connecticut, the government decides that enough is enough. Super heroes are required to become government workers and reveal their secret identities, or be placed under arrest. Iron Man sides with the government, while Captain America amasses a team of rebels to fight the “Super Hero Registration Act.” Robert Downey Jr.’s smug demeanor bouncing off Chris Evans’ staunch exterior already worked masterfully in the first Avengers, ...

The Dark Knight vs. The Man of Tomorrow.  The Caped Crusader vs. the Last Son of Krypton.  Bruce Wayne vs. Clark Kent.  However it’s framed, Warner Brothers is releasing the sequel to the financially successful Man of Steel in the form of Batman vs. Superman on July 17, 2015. With the recent casting of Ben Affleck as Batman, it’s difficult to not speculate how the clash of these titans will take place. Luckily, there is ample evidence to examine how these two heroes will come to blows. Hit the jump for Batman and Superman’s greatest brawls for a look into what scenes Zack Snyder may decide to use for his much anticipated sequel.  The Dark Knight Returns “I want you to remember, Clark, in all the years to come, in your most private moments, I want you to remember my hand at your throat.” Considered by many to be the pinnacle Batman/Superman fight, The Dark Knight Returns takes place in the distant future as an elderly Bruce Wayne returns to the cape and cowl, protecting Gotham City with a much harsher brand of justice. After a final fight with the Joker, the U.S. Government sends their number one weapon after the Dark Knight: Superman. During their city-flattening fight, with Clark seconds from defeat, Bruce self-induces a non-lethal heart attack to preserve both their lives, allowing him to return to fight crime in Gotham in secrecy. This fight exemplifies the differing ideologies between these two heroes to a tee, with Batman using everything at his disposal ...

Starlord. Drax the Destroyer. Gamora. Groot. Rocket Raccoon. Remember these names, my friends, as these are about to reach the same level as Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America for the general public.  Guardians of the Galaxy is Marvel Studios’ next team movie.  Hitting the silver screens on August 1st, 2014, Guardians will be the summer movie to beat.  Considering this is Marvel’s first original, and certainly different, property making the jump from comic books to the movies in some time, they’re hedging their bets that the film will stand tall alongside its fellow Avengers. What is it about this motley cast of characters that elicits positive reactions from those who have read their stories?  What is it about the movie itself that gives Marvel such high hopes?  What makes this ragtag group of universe travellers better than their earth based super hero counterparts?  Hit the jump for Collider’s look into what Marvel’s next big enterprise is all about. The Cast OK...Deep breath folks. In the cast so far, we have Chris Pratt as Starlord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Bradley Cooper voicing the wise-cracking, machine gun-toting Rocket Raccoon, Glenn Close as leader of Nova Corps, John C. Reilly as a cop in the ranks of Nova Corps, Michael Rooker as Yondu the bounty hunter, and Vin Diesel is confirmed to be in talks to play the living tree, Groot. But wait! Those are just the heroes! On the villains’ side we have Karen Gillan as Nebula, Lee Pace ...

Female Superhero Movies: Time for Superheroines Like WONDER WOMAN and CAPTAIN MARVEL to Fly Solo

The movie-going audience has spoken.  Movies with female protagonists are becoming more popular in this day and age.  With recent financial successes, such as Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy’s The Heat, turning studios’ heads, its time to take the plunge and start giving more superheroines a time to shine.  While female comic book protagonists starring in their own movies is hardly new (see Catwoman, Elektra, Supergirl), there’s a wealth of heroines still out there that can hold up a movie just as well as their male counterparts. Hit the jump for Collider’s best options for female driven comic book films that will get people in the seats. Black Widow The foundation has already been set for this one. Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanov has appeared in two Marvel Studios’ films: Iron Man 2 and The Avengers respectively, with another appearance on the way early next year, 2014, in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  The Black Widow is a character with a long and interesting history, having appeared in the comic books around the same time as Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor decades ago, that deserves to have her own vehicle that could go into more detail about her origins. While Black Widow doesn’t have any super powers of her own, it would make for an interesting story to see this espionage extraordinaire do some wet work while the flashier super heroes such as Tony Stark and Steve Rogers were getting the limelight.  Natasha Romanov is the James Bond of the Marvel Universe: strong, calm, ...

The Avengers.  Justice League.  Spider-Man.  The Walking Dead.  All of these properties started, and continue, in the form of monthly periodicals we call “comic books”.  Many of the comic book properties we see come from the “Big Two” (Marvel and DC) and have been running for over 50 years.  Image Comics, current publisher of the runaway smash The Walking Dead that has been running for nearly a decade at this point,  is gaining steam and competing with the two major juggernauts in its field by creating new IPs at a breakneck pace.  All of the Marvel, DC, and Image stories for these properties you see on the big screen or on TV (with a little bit of tweaking), originated within these companies’ publications. While the characters may have the same names and identities, their appearances and back stories have changed to reflect the modern times.  With all of these separate stories being created, one may ask, what’s happening in the world of comics today?  Well hit the jump for a guided tour of the big current storylines for your favorite heroes.  Beware: Spoilers follow.  Spiderman is Doctor Octopus, Doctor Octopus is Spiderman. Here we go.  With Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel Studios takes their first step from dominating the silver screen to the small screen.  The anticipation for this one has been building for quite some time, tail ending off the most recent Marvel box office juggernauts, Iron Man 3 and The Avengers. Joss Whedon and co. hope to put on display the excitement of the Marvel Universe through the eyes of the non-superpowered ranks of S.H.I.E.L.D (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division).  Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) are the two major mainstays from the Marvel movie-verse who appear in the pilot and they’ve got a big cast to back them up. Hit the jump for a recap of the premiere episode of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The episode begins with an ominous voice retelling the events of the Avengers flick and most likely laying groundwork for the threat that faces S.H.I.E.L.D this season. J. August Richards (as Mike Peterson, a factory worker and single father), starts displaying some super powers right out of the gate, after shakily telling his son that they won’t be able to afford the Avengers toys he was eyeing.  A nice world-building scene, in that one of the coolest parts of the show should be establishing a world that is introduced to the likes of a team of aliens, gods, and monsters and how the general populace reacts to this. Cue Paris (!) as agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), clearly the character made for the audience to relate to ...

For as long as there’s been a Batman, there’s been a Commissioner Gordon. Gordon even predates mainstays such as Alfred and Robin! With the recent announcement by Fox that a Commissioner Gordon television series is in the works called Gotham, now is the time to take stock of the Commissioner’s history and see which stories best display what makes him such an enthralling character that has stood the test of time. In it, the Joker paralyzes Barbara Gordon and kidnaps the Commissioner, subjugating him to both physical and emotional torture. Eventually, Gordon is saved by Batman, but its what he does immediately after being rescued that speaks volume of his character. He implores Bruce to bring Joker in “by the book”, letting him know that despite all ...

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has landed, and it has certainly left its mark with an Avengers share of the viewership.  With over 20 million viewers having seen the first episode (factoring in DVR viewings, repeat airings, and online viewing), ABC/Disney studios is certainly happy with the pilot’s performance.  As for the show itself, when last we left our heroes in the first episode: the team has been assembled, a mysterious villain lurks in the shadows, and Coulson’s car flew through the air with the greatest of ease.  Tonight’s episode, entitled “0-8-4”, promised surprises for both the protagonists and the audience itself with a surprise mystery guest. Hit the jump for a recap of the second episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The episode follows the team being called into Peru to investigate a “0-8-4”, S.H.I.E.L.D lingo for “we have no idea what this is”.  Recent addition to the crew, Skye, the hacker who’s out of her depth, attempts to make small talk with the wacky duo of Fitz and Simmons, while Grant and Melinda (now dubbed “The Cavalry”) generally kick ass as the two highly trained agents that they are, skeptical about the whole operation in general.  Coulson continues to be his calm and charming self, leading the team in the field while also meeting an old friend who’s now a commander in the Peruvian army, which was a nice touch as it helped to show that these characters have a world and back story unto themselves. The group discovers that the “0-8-4” is actually a piece of ...

Comic Book Corner: Origin Stories Primer for THOR: THE DARK WORLD, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, and THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

All of our favorite comic book movies have strong ties with the publications that spawned them.  While not exactly the same, story elements and characters are taken repeatedly from the comics for the movies and given a slight, if not extreme, twist.  Rarely will you see completely original characters and/or storylines created for these, with some rare exceptions (Agent Coulson of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Avengers fame being a prime example).   A number of comic book movies are coming down the pike and we’ve put together a primer to fill you in on the origins of the characters and storylines you’ll be seeing in Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and The Avengers: Age of Ultron.  Hit the jump for a breakdown. Thor: Dark World Malekith the Dark Elf The antagonist of the upcoming, much anticipated sequel, Malekith was created by famed Thor writer/artist, Walter Simonson, as an evil elf with a desire to obtain a weapon known as the Casket of Ancient Winters.  Aside from having one of the most “metal” names ever created, the Casket, when opened, blankets the world with a never ending winter and grants the user powers beyond their wildest dreams.  Malekith is a trickster very similar to Loki, disguising himself in order to fool his enemies and generally cracking wise as he torments his enemies.  While the footage released for Dark World has been tight lipped with Malekith’s character and motivations, tending to focus more on Loki and smartly so as he’s becoming more ...

Thrills! Chills! Betrayals! Peruvian militants! Samuel L Jackson cameos!  All this and more could be found in the previous two episodes of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  The latest episode of S.H.I.E.L.D., entitled “The Asset”, follows the recently formed team attempting to rescue a kidnapped scientist named Dr. Franklin Hall, who in the comics becomes the supervillain known as Graviton.  Will Skye betray the team to the Rising Tide?  Will Coulson’s mysterious revival be further explored?  Who else from the Marvel Movieverse will make an appearance? Hit the jump to find out! The episode begins with a trucker sucking down a Big Gulp, who actually turns out to be a S.H.I.E.L.D agent, accompanied by two black SUVs.  The SUVs and the truck itself are flung into the air (which is very reminiscent of Magneto from the X-Men franchise) as a scientist in S.H.I.E.L.D’s employ is kidnapped from the back of the truck.  Cue the agents as Skye trains with Agent Ward in "How to be a Field Agent".  This was a nice scene as we finally got to see the agents in a quiet environment, talking amongst themselves and revealing more about each of their characters. The reveal that the truth serum Ward was given in the pilot episode didn’t actually exist was fantastic, and helps to remind that audience that, yes, S.H.I.E.L.D is an espionage agency and things aren’t necessarily what they seem. The story then digs into the agents performing some detective work, aside from constant explosions and gunfights.  Not as much in ...

Marvel’s AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Recap –“Eye-Spy”

Last time, on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the gang fought against the insidious motivations of Quinn and foreshadowed the villainous, Graviton, making an appearance in the future.  On tonight’s episode, entitled “Eye-Spy”, Coulson is faced with leading his newly formed team against a former protege who has gone rogue.  Will the recently-picked-up-for-a-full-season show deliver the goods this week?  Will Coulson’s time in Tahiti be further explored? Is he secretly the Vision/an LMD/Clone/Doctor Octopus in disguise?  Hit the jump to find out. Our episode begins with a group of masked men transporting diamonds on behalf of their boss through Stockholm, Sweden.  The diamonds are stolen by a rogue agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. with super-human abilities who was apparently trained by Coulson himself, so Phil wrangles the team behind him on a mission that hits close to home.  An episode that shines a further spotlight on Agent Coulson’s past is always welcome, as it gives the opportunity to follow around the, far and away, most charismatic member of the cast. However, this is sort of proving to be a double-edged sword as the rest of the cast just isn’t staying in step with Clark Gregg’s long strides for the most part.  Fitz and Simmons, the team’s “techies”, are especially grating this episode, not really offering much to the proceedings.  If you’re going to create a duo to fulfill the comedic relief quotient, make sure they’re able to emphasize the “comedic” part of the equation so their jokes don’t fall flat, as they did this time ...

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.  Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man.  Chris Evans as Captain America. These are just a few staples to be found in the superhero movie genre that have really established themselves as their characters.  For some, it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing these bigger-than-life figures, but for many of these movies, each role was nearly given to someone else.  In this article, we'll walk you through some of these scenarios of possible alternate casting, cases where we can delve into what exactly happened and the very different franchises they could have been.  Hit the jump for more. Dougray Scott as Wolverine Dougray Scott, of Mission: Impossible 2, was originally Bryan Singer’s first choice to play the Canadian mutant.  Unfortunately, due to additional shooting that was needed to finish out M:I2, Scott couldn’t accept the role.  With filming about to being on the first X-Men movie, Singer decided to give the relatively unknown Aussie theater performer, Hugh Jackman, a chance to shine and that was history.  To this day, Scott feels no animosity towards losing the role and is content with his movie and television resume.  While this portrayal of Wolverine would have most certainly been different than Jackman’s, that’s nothing in comparison to what would have been had comic creators Stan Lee and Chris Claremont had their way when they were pitching the X-Men film in the 90s.  Lee and Claremont had meetings with James Cameron to try to not only establish an X-Men movie franchise, but to also place ...

Previously, on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Coulson and the gang matched wits with a rogue agent with abilities stemming from her cybernetic eye.  Skye and Agent Grant got into espionage hijinks as Fitz and Simmons made witty retorts.  The “Cavalry” showed off some of her fighting prowess, Agent Coulson revealed a bit more of his past, and viewership overall waned.  Tonight’s episode, “Girl in the Flower Dress”, finds the team stumbling across a new super soldier. Will this episode be enough to bring folks back into the fold?  Hit the jump for our recap. We start our episode with the Agents of M.A.L.T.A landing in Stockholm, Switzerland and...kidding guys, kidding.  The episode begins with a street magician, Chan, with powers beyond those of mortal men, think the Human Torch, wrangling a beautiful woman from the crowd.  The woman, of course, is more than she appears to be and takes the magician hostage with the help of two men in hazmat suits.  Meanwhile, Skye and Grant are playing Battleship in a whimsical scene to help further Skye’s training.  Coulson looks on with Agent May, sowing the seeds of a possible romance as she states that she’s willing to bust out the mats downstairs for some *ahem* training. Good start to the episode, as they give you a clear goal of what the gang will be dealing with, but also give some time to the interactions and developing characters of the team itself.  I found this scene to be charming, and one of the ...

Horror movies are a funny bird.  As you can tell from just looking at your Netflix account or by skimming through the selections of your local Redbox, there are so many of horror films that are produced on a steady basis, and you probably haven't heard of many of them.  I was shocked the other day when I discovered there was an actual horror movie entitled "Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyan."  Was the world clamoring for a horror movie about Paul Bunyan?  I haven’t seen this yet, and it may be enjoyable in a B-movie sort of way, but scary?  When you really think about it, what’s the percentage of horror movies that are made nowadays that can be considered truly terrifying? Well turn out the lights, throw some magic dust on the fire in honor of the Midnight Society, and hit the jump as I show you five movies guaranteed to scare you this Halloween. Inside (A l'interieur) I’ve seen a lot of horror movies in my time, and this is one of the only scary movies where I watched it once, and simply could not revisit it as I was too freaked out to watch it again.  Produced in France, this foreign horror flick drops us into the world of a pregnant woman who has recently lost her husband, so she's struggling to figure out how she wants to spend her life and whether or not she even wants to raise the baby.  Cue an image of a woman dressed in ...

Hello, true believers!  After a week’s break, we are back to the love/hate relationship that is Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  In tonight’s episode, titled “F.Z.Z.T.,” the Fury gang finds itself taking on an elusive killer where “no one is safe!” The episode is the precursor to the tie-in episode to this weekend’s much anticipated sequel, Thor: The Dark World, but will F.Z.Z.T. be able to stand on its own? Hit the jump for my review.  S.H.I.E.L.D. has had more than its share of problems when it comes to both the ratings department and, most importantly, the story department.  Viewers are beginning to flock away from the show in droves, and the complaints regarding subplots going nowhere and lack of three-dimensional characters are beginning to show more with each passing week.  So did this most recent episode address all the problems? Unfortunately, no. Our episode begins with Skye being readily accepted back into the crew with next to no repercussions for her previous betrayal.  It is a bit hard to believe that everyone, minus Ward, is so nonchalant about Skye figuratively plunging a knife into their backs in the previous episode, only to find everyone welcoming her back with open arms.  If they were all a group of buddies in a fantasy football league, that would be one thing, but this is S.H.I.E.L.D. They’re an espionage agency which is harboring a potential double agent on the go ahead from their commanding officer, a.k.a. Coulson.  More raised eyebrows would be nice, regardless of monitoring Skye’s ...

Marvel Studios recently dropped a bombshell that they would be partnering with Netflix in creating four brand new television series based on some of their “street level” characters for a 2015 release date.  These characters include Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist.  Following each of these individual television series, a mini series entitled “Defenders” will join these characters together to fight crime as a team, in a similar vein as the Avengers.  With this news, Collider wants to walk you through each of these characters to get you prepared for the upcoming Marvel/Netflix shows.  Hit the jump for our first week entry on Daredevil. Daredevil!  The Man without Fear!  When Matt Murdock attempts to save an old man’s life by pushing him out of the way of a moving truck, his life is forever changed when a barrel of radioactive waste splashes onto his eyes, blinding him permanently.  Though he has lost his sight, he gains the ability to “see” his environment around him with a radar sense.  Over the years, Matt trains intensely in the gym, and in school, to not only become a lawyer, but fight crime after the murder of his father, the boxer Battlin’ Jack Murdock.  With the help of the enigmatic ninja named Stick, Daredevil is born to fight crime and protect the innocent in the boroughs of New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen. Now that we’ve gotten the official origin out of the way, Daredevil is the most recognized, by and large, among the four ...

With Marvel’s announcement last week that they will be partnering with Netflix to produce four superhero based television shows, in the form of Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones respectively, has the once-palpable excitement for Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. waned even further?  This week, the group attempts to save Agents Ward and Fitz after their deployment on a “Level 8” mission.  What makes a Level 8 mission more dangerous than a Level 7?  Will the characters of the show be able to save their co-workers in time and what secrets await them?  Hit the jump for our recap of “The Hub”. The episode begins with Agent Coulson being led into a dark basement room in an “underground Siberian prison” which leads to pulling out an undercover agent named Shaw.  In a scene reminiscent of Total Recall, a device is extricated from Shaw’s nose and the agents are informed that the mission has been bumped up to Level 8 (!). Skye is a little flustered that there even is a Level 8, which is understandable since Level 7 was portrayed as the end all be all in the show’s pilot.  How many levels are there anyway?  Regardless, this leads to the team making a trip to “The Hub,” a.k.a. S.H.I.E.L.D’s big meeting spot for agents, where they are introduced to Victoria Hand. Last week, Collider walked you through the most popular of the quartet of characters that Marvel Studios will be bringing to the small screen, in their 2015 television deal with Netflix, with Daredevil.  This week, we thought we’d take the opportunity to introduce you to the lesser known Jessica Jones.  Jones originally was created by the team of Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos in the series, “Alias”, and no, we aren’t referring to the Jennifer Garner show.  Alias was one of Marvel’s first forays into an adult line of books entitled “Marvel Max” that had an anything goes style to it.  So what makes Jessica Jones specifically a great character for a television series of her own, when not too many people have heard of her?  Hit the jump to find out. The Character In a nutshell, Jessica Jones is a private investigator who was once a superhero named Jewel. She has superhuman strength, speed, invulnerability, and curses like a sailor at every opportunity she gets, which happens to not be one of her superpowers.  She had a long history with teams such as the Avengers and other Marvel characters like Luke Cage and Iron Fist, who we will get to in the coming weeks.  She even went to high school with Peter Parker, aka Spiderman, and had something of a crush on him.  Her ingrained history created for some interesting stories during the run of her solo book, while her unique character and place in the universe helped to distinguish ...

On this week’s episode of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., entitled “The Well”, the gang finds themselves dealing directly with a threat spawning from the recently released, Thor: The Dark World. It’s certainly an interesting decision to see Marvel tying their universes so closely together with the television series being affected by the events of a movie that was released only two weeks ago.  However, as Asgardian shenanigans run amok, does this mean the audience will be granted with an appearance by a god of mischief or thunder?  Will this tie-in prove successful both critically and in the ratings for the agents?  Hit the jump to find out. I’m going to get this out right now, I’m a huge sucker for Thor.  He’s one of my favorite comic characters, so seeing an episode with Asgard as a focal point is always a plus for me.  Our episode begins with a voiceover discussing what Asgardians are in the Marvel movie-verse: aliens rather than actual gods.  Cue a scene of the agents cleaning up after the events of Thor’s recent adventure on earth, discussing that ancient humans weren’t able to come to grips with what Asgardians were exactly, so just happened to call them gods in norse mythology.  From here, we are introduced to two Norwegian hippies who come across an Asgardian staff which gives one of the pair superhuman strength. Welcome back, True Believers! Last week, the Agents took on the otherworldly threats originating from Asgard, Thor’s HQ.  This week, in an episode titled “Repairs”, the team tackles a threat that could potentially be supernatural (surprising that this one wasn’t aired before Halloween).  Danger, intrigue, and romance are sure to be found in this episode that promises to delve further into Agent Melinda May’s backstory.  Hit the jump for our recap of tonight's episode of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. We start out our episode with a girl in a panic creating some apparent telekinetic tomfoolery out of her control, as well as a revelation that Agent May and Ward, who are getting ready for a distress call from Coulson, spent the night together.  In a lot of shows, we tend to follow a fairly standard “opposites attract” guideline when it comes to romances between the characters, so it’s nice to see two characters who would have the most in common find each other, if even for just a night as May does her best sprint of shame out of the room. Coulson takes a minute to debrief Skye on the mission and even gets a chance to outshine the wonder twins, Fitz and Simmons.  The business side of the team (Coulson, May, and Ward, with Skye in the background) proceed to capture the believed rogue telekinetic, Hannah Hutchens, as an angry mob surrounds her and she freaks out, Carrie-style.  Meanwhile, Fitz and Simmons decide the best thing they should do is prank ...
